“Of course I know,” Fiona shot back, rolling her eyes. “Catherine would never get back together with you.”
Lance felt the sting of her words. The truth was, he was the one who would never get back together with Catherine. Wasn’t that obvious?
“Go on, get out of here. You’re blocking your grandfather from going to his room.” Fiona could barely stand to look at him and waved him off with a flick of her hand.
As Lance turned around, he finally noticed Ableson standing quietly by the door. He stepped aside. “Grandfather.”
Ableson nodded. “Getting engaged isn’t something you do on a whim. Think it through.”
Lance nodded back. “I know.”

Catherine had just walked through the door when her phone buzzed again. Amy was calling. Texting wasn’t enough for her, she always wanted to talk.
“What took you so long to get home?” Amy’s voice was bright, almost teasing.
Catherine pinched the bridge of her nose, feeling the exhaustion settle in. “Traffic was bad,” she said.
Back when she was Lance’s secretary, the company had given her a car. But after she transferred to the logistics department, she’d had to give it back. Now, she took the bus to work every day, which took twice as long. She reminded herself it was almost over.
“You’re pregnant. Doesn’t your husband drive you to work?” Amy kept talking, fiddling with her nails. “What’s his family like? Do they ever treat you badly because you’re an orphan?”
Catherine hesitated, then forced a smile into her voice. “I don’t think so. I see the way Harrison treats you. When you get pregnant, I bet he’ll be a great dad.”
She gently steered the conversation away from herself, and Amy happily followed the lead.
“Of course. I told him, he doesn’t have to be a perfect husband, but he has to be a good father. My family isn’t as rich as his, but my parents love me. I’m telling you, family is everything for a kid. Make sure your husband is involved, you know? That’s how a child grows up healthy, both inside and out…”
Catherine felt her heart clench. Her hand tightened around the phone. She went quiet, and Amy must have noticed.
Amy’s voice softened. “Hey, it’s okay. Even if your husband isn’t the warmest person, as long as the baby has a dad, that’s better than nothing.”
