The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 129

The world spun, and Catherine’s hands shot out, grabbing for anything she could find. Her fingers closed tight around the railing, holding on for dear life. Pain shot through her arm, stretching her muscles, but at least she was still hanging there, not tumbling down the stairs.

Her body was pitched awkwardly backward, gravity pulling her down, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t find her balance again. The landing was completely empty. In a panic, her eyes darted around, searching for help, but all she saw was Adelina falling straight into Lance’s arms.

Lance looked worried, his dark eyes focused only on Adelina. Belinda and Sarah hurried over from the VIP seats, and soon a whole group crowded around Adelina, fussing over her. No one noticed Catherine, clinging to the railing, struggling to hold on. She felt ridiculous, desperate, and dangerously close to slipping.

Her arms were shaking, every bit of strength draining away. All that kept her hanging on was stubborn willpower. If she fell down all those steps, what would happen to the baby?

She tried to cry out, but her heart was pounding so hard she couldn’t get any sound out. Her hands, pale and trembling, clung to the railing as her fingers slowly started to slip. She fought to grip harder, but her strength was gone. She watched, helpless, as her hands lost their hold. Her body tipped backward, completely out of control.

Catherine squeezed her eyes shut. A single tear slid down her cheek.

She’d imagined a lot of things. She’d pictured Lance finding out about the baby, pictured the two of them fighting for custody. She’d pictured losing in court, barely getting to see her own child. But she’d never imagined losing the baby before it was even born. The only person in the world who was truly hers.

Suddenly, someone shouted, “Careful!”

The pain she braced herself for never came. Strong hands caught her, steadying her, and gently sat her down at the top of the stairs. Catherine blinked, finding herself sitting safely on the top step, staring down at all those stairs below.

Lance was walking away, still holding Adelina, never once looking back at her. People started to drift off, leaving the hall below empty and echoing. From up here, it looked even higher, even more lonely.

A shiver crawled up her spine. The chill inside her was worse than any winter she’d ever known.

“You just scared the hell out of me,” someone said.
