The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 142

“Catherine originally just asked for half a day off. She just messaged again, now she wants several days,” Aaron reported quietly.

Lance spun a pen between his fingers, face completely unreadable, but there was something in his eyes that said he’d seen this coming all along.

“You can go,” he said.

Alex turned on his heel and left right away. The door closed with a soft click, and silence fell over the office.

Aaron kept his eyes glued to the floor, barely even breathing. He was the only one who knew that Lance had handed Catherine a resignation agreement, and he’d been the one to add all those extra terms, just like Lance told him to.

“Did you get to the bottom of what happened at the engagement party?” Lance asked, not mentioning Catherine again.

Aaron caught on and changed gears. “We don’t have hard evidence yet, but everything points to Shirley. She used the authority Adelina gave her to skim off the top and keep the difference.”

Adelina had taken Shirley along when she went to pick out her dress and shoes for the party. The dress cost millions, so Shirley didn’t dare touch it, but she noticed the shoes were worth tens of thousands and saw her chance.

She found a nearly identical pair online from the same factory, and the seller wanted thirty thousand. Shirley paid a deposit, checked the shoes, then threatened to report the seller for selling fakes. She forced them to accept only eight thousand in the end.

The seller was furious and took it out on the shoes.

“Shirley’s got some serious character issues. After she got fired last time, Adelina never should’ve gone back to her,” Aaron said, thinking to himself that Adelina was way too easily swayed by Shirley’s sweet talk. Honestly, the woman just wasn’t that sharp.

“Shirley?” Lance repeated, like the name was half familiar.

Aaron glanced at him and realized the problem. “You don’t remember her? She was the secretary who helped Adelina trick you into signing Catherine’s last resignation agreement.”
