Amanda explained.
The VIP hospital room looked more like a cozy suite than anything medical. There was a big bed for the patient, a smaller one for overnight guests, a comfy sofa, a little table, and even a TV. It was quiet, peaceful... almost like being at home. The place felt safe and warm.
Lorinda glanced around, a little overwhelmed. “This place must cost a fortune, right?”
She was right. The room had to be at least ten times pricier than a regular one.
Amanda started unpacking the lunch containers they’d brought. “Gavin said he’s covering the hospital stay,” she said. “We... well, you guys just have to handle the medicine and treatments.”
Catherine walked over to Patty, who sat on the bed wearing a little black hat pulled low. “Sweetie, why are you wearing your hat inside?”
She didn’t get an answer, but she did notice Patty’s eyes were red and puffy, like she’d been crying all morning.
“What’s wrong?” Catherine asked, her voice gentle.
Patty sniffled, her eyes filling up again. “Amanda cut my hair.”
Catherine’s heart twisted. She carefully lifted the edge of Patty’s hat, just enough to peek. All that shiny black hair was gone, leaving her scalp bare and vulnerable.
Amanda sighed and sat down. “I told you, honey, when you’re sick like this, it’s better to cut your hair first. Otherwise, it’ll just fall out anyway and get everywhere.”
Patty lowered her head and cried softly, shoulders shaking.
Catherine grabbed a tissue and knelt beside her. “Hey, it’s okay. Your hair will grow back, I promise.”
“But it’ll take forever,” Patty whispered, fat tears rolling down her cheeks.
Catherine reached out, tucking a strand of nothing behind Patty’s ear. “You know what? I’ll buy you a wig. A pretty one, maybe even longer than your real hair. You can wear it until your own grows back, alright?”
Patty looked up, her tears slowing. “Really?”
