Aaron had booked the meeting room yesterday afternoon while she was out, so Catherine didn’t know what it was about until she walked in. As she finished speaking, she finally noticed Lance watching her, his gaze sharp and thoughtful.
Their eyes met. Lance’s were so dark, so intense, it made her breath catch for a second. His Adam’s apple moved as he spoke. “It’s the government project. We’re teaming up with Golden Horizon Enterprises. We’ll need to put together a new team to coordinate with them.”
Catherine already knew the basics. She nodded. “I’ll get ready for the meeting.”
She turned to leave. The black dress she wore skimmed over her figure, and her legs looked long and smooth, pale against the dark fabric.
Lance looked down, eyelashes hiding whatever was flickering in his eyes. After a moment, he reached for his coffee, his hand steady and sure. He took a sip. The taste was bitter, filling his mouth, the smell strong in the air. Coffee was nothing like alcohol or cigarettes. It wasn’t addictive, but after a while without it, he always felt like something was missing. Especially Catherine’s coffee…it always tasted different. Better.
Building a new team from different departments to work with Golden Horizon was a huge challenge. Every department had sent her their candidates. Catherine had gone through the lists carefully, only picking people with at least three years at SilverLeaf Industries, people who’d been part of big projects before. She put together two team options, making sure everyone’s strengths were balanced, then handed the lists to Lance.
At ten, the meeting started. The board joined online, their faces serious on the screen.
The conference room was quiet. Lance walked everyone through Catherine’s two team proposals, analyzing the pros and cons. In the end, they voted. The choice was unanimous—the first team it was.
“We’ve got a team, but who’s going to lead it?” someone from PR asked.
“We’ll pick the best person from the team,” Lance said. He clearly didn’t want to waste too much time or attention on this project. The partnership was aboveboard. There were plenty of eyes on it. No way Golden Horizon would dare pull anything shady, not with Gavin involved. Lance seemed sure of that.
Most of the higher-ups nodded in agreement.
