Sunlight spilled over him, from his collarbone down. He leaned back in his chair, looking effortlessly elegant and just a little lazy, as if he hadn’t been the one glowering through the conference room meeting a few minutes ago.
“There are some files here. You take care of them.”
Catherine glanced at the pile of paperwork stacked on his desk. Setting down his coffee, she flipped through a few pages. It was all minor stuff, nothing important.
Still, she quietly gathered up the whole stack.
“Lance, can I get an assistant?”
Lance’s long fingers wrapped around his coffee cup as he took a slow sip. He thought it over for a moment. “Sure. Pick anyone from the secretarial pool.”
“Thanks, Lance.” Catherine nodded, hugging the files to her chest as she left his office.
She picked Letty as her assistant. Letty’s main job was to help her sort through all the random, meaningless tasks Lance tossed her way. Whenever Lance wanted coffee, Catherine would make it and Letty would bring it to him. Honestly, Letty was a lifesaver, handling almost everything a secretary could.
Even with that help, Catherine still had her team meetings interrupted again and again. Every time, it was Lance asking for something.
At first, he’d send over small, pointless things that Catherine could easily pass to Letty. But soon, he started giving her tasks that only she could handle. Before long, Catherine was buried in work, and her entire team was falling behind.
She had no choice but to stay late.
That afternoon, her group went over every detail of the government project. After their first talk with the people from Golden Horizon Enterprises, they made some initial changes to the proposal. Catherine reviewed the updated plan, tweaked a few sections, and emailed it straight to the project lead at Golden Horizon.
She’d barely hit send when her phone buzzed.
A message from Gavin lit up her screen. [You’re running the government project?]
Catherine replied, [Yes.]
Gavin sent a grinning emoji. [Looking forward to working with you.]
