Caught off guard by the question, she forced a small smile and shook her head. “No, I haven’t. It makes sense that Lance and Adelina are so close.”
“Really?” Gavin gave her a look, his tone full of suggestion. “You’re telling me Lance has never done anything to disappoint Adelina?”
Catherine didn’t answer. She just sat there, silent.
“Of course not,” Adelina chimed in, looping her arm around Lance’s and flashing a perfect smile. “Lance always keeps his promises. If he’s with me, he would never do anything to hurt me.”
For some reason, Catherine couldn’t help but remember that moment. Not even a kiss, really. Just Lance pressing his lips hard against her neck, leaving a mark behind.
Did that count as betraying Adelina? Maybe he didn’t have feelings for her, but even just the action alone had definitely crossed a line.
“Eat before it gets cold,” Lance said, piling more food into Adelina’s bowl until it was nearly overflowing. He seemed completely tuned out from everything else, only focused on her.
Adelina nodded and took small, careful bites, letting him fuss over her.
Catherine looked down at her plate. Her lashes cast shadows under her eyes, hiding the sadness there.
“So, Lance, when are you and Adelina getting married?” Gavin asked, swinging his leg and grinning like he was enjoying some private joke.
He was talking to Lance, but his eyes kept drifting to Catherine.
“We’ll let you know when it happens,” Lance replied, still not looking up.
“Get married, have a kid, live happily ever after. The perfect little family of three…” Gavin really emphasized the last part.
Every word made Catherine tense up a little more. Her brows drew together, and she felt her heart sinking.
She was about to say something, but before she could, Adelina spoke up.
“Lance, I… I don’t feel like eating anymore.”
Just a minute ago, Adelina had been eating happily. Now, her face was suddenly pale, and she put her chopsticks down.
Lance shot Gavin a cold look that could have frozen water.
