Adolf leaned in toward Lance. “Your fiancée isn’t nearly as pretty as her. Remember that news story from before? Lara, right? They weren’t wrong. Your taste really isn’t great.”
Catherine came back into the room with a cup of hot water, just in time to catch what Adolf said. She paused, eyes flicking to Lance.
The light in the room was behind him, casting his features in a soft glow, making it hard to read his expression. But his eyes shifted from Adolf to Catherine, and the way he looked at her made her heart skip a beat.
“Adolf, you’ve had enough to drink.” She put the hot water right in front of him, hoping to change the topic.
Instead, Adolf only got more excited. “See? She’s so thoughtful. After watching you go all out to please Polly, I figured she must be the difficult type, not exactly caring. Catherine’s way better.”
Lance’s lips curved in a half smile as he glanced at Catherine. There was something unreadable in his gaze.
“This is just what I do as a colleague. It doesn’t count as being thoughtful. Lewis is a good colleague too.” Catherine set down the cup and smiled politely.
Adolf smacked his forehead. “Oh, right, I forgot. Catherine and Lewis are together now. Even if you wanted to, Lance, you’re out of luck.”
“Adolf, stop joking. Lance isn’t interested.” Catherine sat back down, her voice calm.
Lance’s jaw tightened, and his eyes turned a shade darker.
“That’s because Lance has no taste,” Adolf said, turning to Catherine. “Honestly, you and Lewis are a perfect match. I’ll promote him, make him my assistant. That way, his title matches yours.”
Catherine just smiled and steered the conversation away. “You’re joking, Adolf. Lewis has plenty of potential after studying abroad, but that’s not just to match me. We’re just friends.”
Adolf was the type to actually promote Lewis just because he knew Catherine. But if she denied everything, who knew, maybe Adolf would start to resent Lewis instead.
Thinking it over, Catherine added, “For now, we’re just friends.”
