Catherine told Lorinda everything Patty had said, not leaving out a single detail.
“I just have this weird feeling about it all,” she admitted.
“She…” Lorinda started, but before she could finish, Jasper suddenly burst into loud, dramatic tears. Lorinda jumped up right away, scooping him into her arms and rocking him gently.
“There, there, don’t cry. Mommy’s here…” she cooed, walking around the room to calm him. As she paced, she shot Catherine a look, hinting at something.
“Why don’t you go rest in my room for a while? You’ve been so busy lately—you look exhausted.”
Catherine slipped off her jacket and stood up, heading toward Lorinda’s room. “Alright, I’ll take a quick nap. When I wake up, I’ll help you with Jasper.”
“Perfect. Let him nap on your belly for a bit, let him bond with his future wife,” Lorinda teased, patting Jasper’s diapered bottom. “If anyone’s picking a wife for him, I trust you. With your genes and Lance’s, that baby can’t go wrong…”
Just hearing Lance’s name made Catherine’s head throb.
She lay on the bed, tossing and turning, unable to drift off. Even in her dreams, she found herself back in Lance’s office, being grilled about the pregnancy.
When she finally woke up, it was already afternoon. Lorinda and Jasper had been napping too, and they were just waking up in the nursery.
Catherine spent the rest of the day helping with the baby until evening. After dinner, she headed home while Lorinda set up for her livestream and got ready to work.
The next morning, Cabinda’s early summer air was crisp and cool.
Catherine wore a black trench coat over a black and white dress. She had barely set foot in her office when Letty knocked and peeked in.
“Catherine, Lance wants you to come up to his office.”
A chill crept up Catherine’s spine. “Okay, thanks.”
She set her bag down and took a few deep breaths, trying to steady herself before going upstairs.
