Lewis noticed Lance looking at him and gave a respectful nod.
“See you, Lance.”
Lance’s face didn’t give anything away. His Adam’s apple moved, almost like he was about to answer, but nothing came out. It was obvious he had no intention of responding.
Lewis didn’t push it.
He figured someone like Lance, with all his status and power, was used to that kind of distance. Guys like him lived in a different world, one that people like Lewis would never get close to.
Once Lewis and Adolf got into the car, Catherine turned back toward the building. She was in a hurry to get back for her team meeting.
The elevator doors were just about to close when a hand with long, defined fingers slid between them.
The doors opened again. Lance stepped inside, taking up more space than seemed possible.
Catherine thought about reminding him this wasn’t the executive elevator, but he was already inside. He didn’t even press for the top floor.
As the doors finished closing, a faint scent of pine drifted through the small space.
Standing there with him, Catherine could feel her heart beating a little too fast. She instinctively edged herself into the corner.
The elevator stopped at the seventeenth floor with a soft chime. Catherine stepped out, brushing past Lance as she squeezed through the door.
“Lance, I’ll get back to work now,” she said politely, then hurried out.
Lance didn’t move. He just watched her leave, his eyes following her until the doors finally cut off the view.
Catherine couldn’t shake her nerves for the rest of the day. Even during her meeting, an uneasy feeling kept pulling her out of focus, making it impossible to concentrate.
By the time she left work, it was already 7:30.
The early summer sky in Cabinda still held a little light. Catherine drove up from the underground garage, and the city’s noise drifted in through her half-open window as she joined the evening traffic.
Her phone rang suddenly, and her heart dropped.
She tapped her Bluetooth to answer.
“Catherine, something happened.”
Gavin sounded tense, all business.
