“Welcome…”
A sales associate stepped in front of them, stopping them just as they started toward Catherine.
Sarah grabbed Adelina’s arm. “Don’t do anything crazy. We can’t let her suspect anything.”
Adelina clenched her fists, fighting the urge to storm over and tear the dress off Catherine. Instead, she let Sarah guide her to another section of evening gowns.
Even so, Catherine could tell exactly why they were there.
“What’s going on?” Sophia asked, stepping out of the fitting room, catching the uneasy look on Catherine’s face.
She glanced around and immediately spotted Adelina and Sarah pretending to browse on the other side of the boutique.
“Wow, what are the odds? Running into them here.”
Despite her words, Sophia didn’t look happy at all. Still, out of courtesy, she picked up her skirt and walked over.
“Sarah. Adelina.”
When Sarah realized Sophia was the one shopping with Catherine, her expression shifted. “Sophia, you’re acting so distant. We’re going to be family soon, you know.”
“The wedding hasn’t even happened yet, has it? I mean…” Sophia paused, then grinned. “I can’t start calling you family until I get my red envelope.”
Her half-joke seemed to lighten Sarah’s mood a little.
“You’re as cheeky as ever. But seriously, you should spend less time with Catherine from now on.”
Sophia got the hint. Catherine was still Lance’s ex-wife, after all.
“I’m not as lovable as Adelina. She gets to shop with her mom. I have to find someone else to hang out with,” Sophia replied, her words carrying a hidden sting. She was hinting that Belinda treated Adelina like her own daughter, even more than she treated Sophia. It also said a lot about how little her own mom cared about her.
