"Wait, Mom!" Adelina snatched the phone from her and ended the call.
"You can't call them!"
Sarah brushed off her daughter's hand and grabbed the phone back. "I have to call. I won’t let you marry into their family and end up getting hurt."
Adelina stepped away, clutching the phone. "Mom, it doesn’t matter if the James family finds out. If you stir things up now, it’ll only cause chaos on their side. With Ableson in his current state, if anything happens, Lance and I might not be able to get married at all." She had already waited so long. She couldn’t stand the thought of waiting even longer.
Sarah didn’t even hesitate. "We have to know the truth about Catherine’s pregnancy. If we can’t figure it out, then maybe you shouldn’t marry him at all." She had raised Adelina as if she were already part of the family, but she’d never let her daughter be bullied.
"I’ve got a plan. I’ll find out the truth about Catherine’s baby," Adelina said, sounding completely sure of herself. "I’ll handle this. Please, just let me take care of it." She wasn’t the type to back down when things got tough.
Sarah had seen how long Adelina had loved Lance. Seeing her this determined, she gave in.
"Okay. If you have a way, that’s good enough for me. But listen, if you run into anything you can’t handle, you have to tell me. No matter what happens, I’ve got your back." Her words gave Adelina the strength she needed.
Adelina let out a sigh of relief and handed the phone back. "Mom, I’m so glad I have you." She sat down next to her mom, wrapped her arms around her, and snuggled close, soaking in the comfort.
After a gentle moment together, Adelina went upstairs. She pulled out her phone and scrolled through her chat with Shirley.
[Adelina, that woman you saw last time is the orphanage director. She’s the one who raised Catherine. If anyone knows what’s really going on, it’s her!]
[I’ll leave this to you.]
