Sarah was pretty sure Belinda was only upset because of that test result. Once everything got cleared up, she was confident Belinda would forgive Adelina without a second thought.

By the next morning, all the wedding stories had disappeared. It was like none of it had ever happened. The business morning news was all about SilverLeaf Industries launching a new project with Eldervale’s political crowd. Catherine flicked through channel after channel looking for news about Lance, but there was nothing. She frowned and set the remote on the table.

“Aaron will be here soon. He’s bringing you a new phone,” Lance said, sitting on the sofa at the end of the bed, his laptop open as he worked. His brow was tight with worry. The news from yesterday may have been squashed, but gossip had already spread, and it was making things tricky for SilverLeaf.

He checked his watch. “He’ll be here in ten minutes, tops.”

“Why can’t you just give me my old phone?” Catherine asked, not understanding why Lance kept it from her.

Lance looked at her over his screen. “I want you to have some peace and quiet, especially now.”

Since the incident, except for Lorinda, everyone seemed to want to reach Catherine. The phone she’d left with Harrell had rung nonstop until the battery died. If Lance gave it back, there was no way she’d get any rest or heal properly.

“I don’t need all this peace. I just want my phone. It’s more convenient.”

Without it, she couldn’t shake the feeling she was missing something important.

Lance closed his laptop and sat up. “Convenient so you can call Gavin? He wasn’t there for you when it mattered. What makes you think he’d help now?”

He was trying to look out for her, but his words always carried that passive-aggressive tone. Even if there was nothing going on with her and Gavin, hearing Lance speak like this still stung.

Before she could answer, the door opened.

“Lance?” Aaron poked his head in.

“Sign first, please,” Aaron said, a little nervous.

Lance shot him a look but took the pen and began adding his signature to every final page, the room so quiet that the scratching of the pen seemed extra loud.

The baby had been a dream the night before. The nurse had fed him twice and he’d slept straight through until now. He was so peaceful that Catherine almost forgot he was even there, as if he hadn’t left her womb yet.

Aaron eventually drifted closer, peeking down at the sleeping baby.

“Catherine, he’s really handsome,” Aaron said softly, eyes lingering on the baby’s features. In his mind, the kid looked just like Lance.

“Thanks,” Catherine answered, her heart suddenly fluttering with nerves.
