The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 502

She was smiling because she was finally getting discharged from the hospital. But when she spotted Gavin, her smile froze. It faded into something forced as she slowed to a stop.

Lorinda caught her eye and made a silly face, trying to lighten the mood as she and Gavin came over.

“You’re finally out, and my godson too. Thanks for everything,” Lorinda said, going straight to Lance. She took the baby carrier from his hands, offering a polite thank you that sounded a little hollow.

Gavin handed Catherine a bouquet. “You’ve been through a lot,” he said.

She took the flowers, wanting to say thank you, but the words stuck in her throat. Somehow, his comment didn’t match how she felt at all.

“Lance, ever since your wedding got called off, all of Cabinda’s been a mess. No one guessed you’d run off here for some peace and quiet,” Gavin said.

He stood two steps below Lance, looking up at him with that familiar, mischievous grin.

“Did you hear? The Green family wants nothing to do with yours anymore. Adelina’s mom camped outside your house for over a week. Your mom refused to see her, so, in the end, Adelina’s mom started spreading rumors everywhere. She’s telling people you cheated, that you’ve moved on, and your mom’s covering for you.”

Catherine glanced at Lance without thinking.

It made sense that the Green family would make trouble if the wedding was canceled. The last month must have been anything but peaceful for the James family.

“Lance, thanks for taking care of everything lately,” Catherine said softly. “But you should probably go back to Cabinda and deal with it.”

Lance stared at the flowers in her hands, silent for a few seconds, then turned on his heel and started walking toward the parking lot without a word.

“That’s it? He’s just leaving?” Lorinda sounded almost shocked. She’d braced herself for a battle to get Catherine home. She thought it would take way more convincing.

Lorinda huffed. “So now Sarah’s running around starting rumors, saying Lance cheated and dragging the James family’s name through the mud, but it’s just making them the talk of the town. Honestly, no one actually believes it.”

Gavin pounded the steering wheel, accidentally blaring the horn. “I still can’t believe Lance came all this way. You have no idea what he pulled. He deliberately set me up so I’d be stuck in Cabinda.”

He remembered hearing Catherine was about to give birth. After all his calls and messages got ignored, he immediately bought a ticket to Eldervale. But then a huge crisis hit his company, and he was forced to stay in Cabinda.

“Lance said Eldervale’s not safe, that someone’s trying to hurt Catherine, and it might be connected to the Lee family. But none of us even know any Lees. Do you?”

Lorinda looked worried, more concerned about Catherine and the baby’s safety than anything else.

Gavin let out a breath and smacked his forehead. “Actually, I almost forgot… a while back I found something about Catherine’s past. I couldn’t get in touch with you, and then it just slipped my mind.”
