The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 517

The more Catherine tried to hurry, the messier her fingers got. It took forever just to button her shirt. When she finally finished, she turned around, meaning to take Alexander White from Lance.

But then she saw Lance sitting there with the baby in his arms. The image made her pause. Lance, who was always so distant, was wearing a crisp white shirt, his sharp hands cradling Alexander White with an unexpected gentleness. It was strength and tenderness all at once, a contradiction so striking that Catherine felt almost dazed.

In that split second, she realized this man—this man who always seemed untouchable—had a completely different side to him. She’d never seen it before. Honestly, it had never even crossed her mind.

“Where is everyone?” someone called from the hallway, footsteps quick and unsteady.

Gavin appeared in the doorway. The second he saw Lance holding the baby, his expression turned dark.

“Lance, you know this isn’t your house. Why are you just wandering around in here? No wonder you refused that smoke earlier, you were just looking for a reason to sneak back.”

Harrell showed up right after, stopping in the doorway. He watched the three of them—the picture of a family in the nursery—with a soft, contented look.

“I quit,” Lance said calmly, still sitting and holding Alexander.

Gavin let out a mock laugh. “Yeah right, who are you trying to fool? You've been smoking for years. You just quit, just like that?”

Back when Lance took over SilverLeaf Industries, the constant meetings and insane pressure had turned him into a smoker. Catherine couldn’t even remember exactly how long he’d had the habit. But now that Gavin mentioned it, she realized she hadn’t seen Lance smoke in a long time. During that month at the hospital when they spent every day and night together, he didn’t touch a single cigarette. Even before that, Catherine could remember a couple of times when Lance pulled out a pack, hesitated, then put it away without lighting up.

“Catherine,” Lorinda’s voice called out, cutting through the tension as she rushed in. “Alexa’s pretty much done setting up. Time to eat.”

Catherine nodded and turned to Lance. “Let me have the baby.”
