Catherine let out a helpless smile, her thoughts drifting back to Lance before she could even stop herself.
“Catherine, do you really want me to leave Eldervale?”
He’d asked her that in the car, on a day when the sky was so gray it almost felt heavy. She couldn’t read his face at all when he said it. The whole car just went still after that… like even the air didn’t know what to do.
“Harrell’s rushing the paternity test for me. I didn’t realize he knew people here in Eldervale,” Lorinda said, her worry peeking through again.
The next couple of days kind of blurred together. Lorinda wouldn’t stop talking about the test, and Catherine couldn’t do anything to calm her own nerves. The more Lorinda talked, the more anxious Catherine felt, just waiting for the answer.
On the third morning, Catherine was still half-asleep when someone pushed open the door. Ever since Lanny was born, she’d been a light sleeper, so she sat up fast, instantly alert.
“Lorinda?”
Lorinda crept in quietly so she wouldn’t wake Lanny. “The results came in!”
Catherine’s mind just… blanked. She threw back the covers, jumped out of bed, and hurried Lorinda out into the hallway.
“What did it say?”
“It’s official. We’re family.”
Lorinda’s words trembled, her voice thin and shaky. She looked at Catherine, and it was like she wanted to say something more, but just couldn’t get the words out.
Catherine stayed quiet for a few seconds, then gently pulled Lorinda to the living room and poured her a glass of warm water.
“This is great news, you know. You should be happy,” Catherine said softly.
But Lorinda’s reaction surprised her. Catherine had thought Lorinda would be over the moon, maybe even jump up and start dancing around the room. After all, Latonia had always come across as so gentle, so warm—she must have been a wonderful mom. Lorinda finally had a family now, a real one.
Instead, Lorinda just sat there, excitement flickering out almost as soon as it started.
“Honestly,” Lorinda whispered, her eyes suddenly red, “I’ve been waiting for this for so long.” She sniffled, and then, without warning, her tears just started falling.
