Latonia’s voice quivered. “This whole thing is a mess, but the truth doesn’t matter half as much as you and your brother’s safety. Lorinda, your dad already took care of everything. We’re just waiting for you to come home.”
She moved closer to Lorinda, eyes brimming with tears, her voice barely above a whisper. “Come home with us, sweetheart. Please. Just come home...”
Lorinda pulled back, dodging her mother’s hand. “No. I’ve spent years out here, struggling by myself, watching other people live the life that should’ve been mine. I can’t just let it go. We need to go back to the Lee family and get what we deserve.”
Latonia shook her head. “It’s not that simple, Lorinda. If you need someone to blame, blame me. Maybe I wasn’t strong enough. I just can’t risk everything by stirring up the past again. All I want is for our family to stay together... safe, at peace.” She started crying, unable to hide her heartbreak.
“I’m not—”
“Lorinda.”
Catherine stepped in, her tone gentle but firm. “Your dad’s right. Nothing is more important than a family being together. Whatever happened before, let it go. Leaving the country and giving your child a better future matters more than revenge.”
Lorinda glared at her. “I’m not going anywhere. I’m serious. I’m staying.”
Latonia looked lost, her sadness almost too heavy to bear as she glanced at Davis for help.
Davis finally caved, sighing. “Alright, we won’t leave. Not yet. But let’s go home, okay? Your brother is waiting for you.”
“Then take her home too,” Lorinda said, reaching for Catherine’s arm.
Catherine had always imagined the day Lorinda reunited with the Lee family. She expected tears, hugs, and joy, seeing herself quietly standing to the side, happy just to witness it.
But she never dreamed Lorinda would insist on taking her back as well.
