The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 547

The media was less interested in Davis’s reunion with his daughter than in the burning question: Who was the shadowy figure that had pulled the strings, keeping father and daughter apart for over twenty years?

Speculation exploded across every news outlet—headlines, talk shows, comment threads—all hinting, sometimes subtly, sometimes not, in one direction: Geoffrey.

“Any thoughts on Geoffrey’s next move?” Lance mused, tapping a slow, thoughtful rhythm against the table’s edge.

Catherine folded her newspaper and set it aside, considering. “He’s going to make himself out to be a victim—claim he lost a daughter, too.”

“Exactly. Once that story’s out, he’ll stage a heartfelt search for his long-lost daughter, play the grieving father for the cameras, and when he ‘finds’ you in front of everyone…” Lance cocked an eyebrow. “What’s your plan then?”

Lorinda’s public reconciliation with Davis had garnered nothing but joy and support for the Lees. But if Geoffrey spun the same story only for Catherine to turn him away, public sympathy would flip on its head. The crowd that had cheered Lorinda would now see Catherine as heartless and unfeeling—a selfish contrast to Lorinda’s warmth. Being married to Lance would at least shield her from open confrontation, but rumors and behind-the-back slander were sure to follow.

Catherine wasn’t bothered by her own reputation; the insults meant little to her. But Geoffrey’s tactics never stayed the same for long—every ploy was bolder than the last.

Even if she could withstand the salvos herself, she had Lanny to think of.

“We’ll get out in front of it. Suppress the adoption story, stir up a bigger scandal for Geoffrey to chase. Keep him so busy spinning his own PR that he can’t target us,” she said decisively.

Lance’s lips curled in an approving grin. “Look at that. You’ve picked up almost all of my moves.”

Catherine couldn’t quite tell if he meant that as praise or if he found her ruthlessness amusing.

The words hung in the air a moment, then Alexa seemed to remember the unresolved question of Lanny’s parentage. She glanced at Catherine, uncertainty flickering in her eyes.

“Has Lorinda been in touch?” Catherine asked as she made her way down the last few steps.

Alexa’s expression became delicate, almost apologetic. “I sent her a few messages. She said she was busy and hasn’t answered, but… she did ask me to keep an eye on you.”

“If she calls again, just tell her I’m doing well,” Catherine replied softly, a twinge of sorrow tightening her chest. “And, if you can, tell her…”

Alexa cut her off gently. “Catherine, you and Lorinda are best friends. Why go through me? You clearly care about each other. Why not just talk directly?”
