The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 549

She must be imagining things.

Though warmth crept up her ears, Catherine stubbornly repeated to herself that she was just reading into it too much.

“It’s not appropriate,” she protested, giving the sheet a pointed tug—a clear signal for Lance to get off her bed and away from Lanny.

But Lance stayed put, completely unbothered. “What’s not appropriate?” he countered, not moving an inch. “We’re married, legally and officially. What could possibly be inappropriate?”

“Catherine, you know me better than this,” he said calmly.

She did—perhaps too well. She knew exactly what kind of energy he could summon, how relentless he could be at night. She knew his appetite in that department was practically notorious.

Only now did it dawn on Catherine that getting remarried to him wasn’t nearly as simple as she’d thought. In the chaos of that day, it hadn’t occurred to her that they’d once again be husband and wife in every legal sense. She’d somehow forgotten to draft any explicit ground rules about… spousal obligations.

After all their years together, she understood Lance too well. Whether in business or in private, the man had a strict personal policy: never pass up an opportunity.

She nibbled the inside of her lip, her eyes drifting to Lanny, who was nestled between them. The atmosphere hung uncomfortably in the air.

Lance glanced at her sideways, watching her brows knit and relax, tension cycling across her face.

“What are you just standing there for?” he finally asked, voice tinged with mild exasperation. “Lie down.”

“Um?” Catherine startled, realizing his meaning as her eyes fell to the bed. With Lance on the left side of Lanny, the only place left for her was the right.

“Do I strike you as the type who needs to resort to force, Catherine?” Lance asked, arching a brow.

Catherine slipped silently beneath the thin blanket. She didn’t answer, but her obedience spoke volumes—she knew exactly how forceful Lance could be, regardless of how he styled it.

She turned her back and faced Lanny. On his other side, Lance lay flat, attention fixed on the ceiling, his features sharply etched in the dim light, dignified and aloof.

Without even noticing, Catherine dozed off—her mind slipping gradually into dreams.

She dreamed they’d never divorced. Lanny had been born, and the three of them were basking in happiness as a family. But happiness was fleeting. Without warning, Belinda showed up with Adelina in tow, demanding Lance divorce her. Everything unraveled—Catherine was kicked out with nothing, and Lanny’s custody went to Lance. She wasn’t even allowed visitation.
