If Davis had shown even the slightest suspicion toward Geoffrey, he never would have lost Lorinda in the first place.
The bitterness gnawed at him, but above all, he just wanted his wife and daughter safe, his family reunited. Davis had no wish to see brothers at each other's throats—that's why he'd planned on taking them all abroad.
But if Lorinda couldn't let this go and insisted on staying, then he'd stay too. He'd fight, come what may.
“Lorinda, I’m not going to acknowledge them as family. Please, stop digging,” Davis pleaded.
Catherine agreed. “Nothing matters more than having our family together. That’s what you’ve always wanted. As for me, I’ve never put much faith in family ties. It really doesn’t bother me; I’ll be alright.”
Lorinda shook her head vigorously. “That’s not it at all! Can’t you see? Even if we did leave, Geoffrey wouldn’t let us go. The Lee family fortune won’t change hands unless my dad gives his blessing. We’re being forced into this fight—there’s no backing out.”
Geoffrey, always projecting his schemes onto others, never trusted a decent soul like Davis. He figured it was better to keep potential threats up close, under his own watchful eye, rather than let them out into the wild.
“But even if none of that were true, I still couldn’t walk away. They’re pushing you to accept them as family, and I can’t just sit by and do nothing,” Lorinda said, pulling Catherine into a fierce hug. “Catherine, nothing will ever change between us—you’ll always be my best friend, the person I’m closest to.”
Catherine felt her eyes prickle with tears. A crushing wave of guilt she’d buried for so long suddenly swept over her, threatening to pull her under—yet along with it came a surge of deep, comforting warmth.
“Promise me you’ll stay safe. If anything happens, call me—right away,” Catherine said, squeezing her tight. “And whatever you do, please, don’t take any unnecessary risks. Okay?”
“You too,” Lorinda replied, drawing back as something occurred to her. “So, are you with Gavin now, or with Lance?”
