The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 62

The doctor nudged the screen closer so Catherine could see. “That’s the baby’s heartbeat. Listen to it.”

Her stomach was still flat. Most days, Catherine barely remembered she was pregnant. But now, seeing all those numbers on the screen, the doctor tracing out tiny hands and feet, something warm and real settled inside her chest.

This was the only person in the world truly connected to her by blood.

When the ultrasound report printed, Catherine folded it neatly and slipped it into her pocket as she left the room.

Gavin was waiting in the corner, her bag slung over his neck. Two other pregnant women had taken their seats.

“Gavin, you should head back to your room. I have another appointment,” she said.

Gavin dodged as she reached for her bag. “I’m not busy. Let me tag along. We can talk.”

He tucked his phone away and lowered his voice. “Did Adelina mess with you again?”

Catherine shot him a look and yanked her bag from around his neck. “You’re joking, right? I have nothing against Adelina. Why would she bother me?”

Gavin started to protest. “No way. She called me—”

“I’m done with my checkups.” Catherine cut him off. “Go back to your room, Gavin. Thanks for holding my bag.”

She didn’t wait for a response, just turned and walked away.

Gavin’s so-called concern was just him wanting something interesting to watch. After a few run-ins, whatever respect Catherine had for him as Golden Horizon’s CEO was pretty much gone.

She walked ahead, Gavin trailing after her like a persistent puppy.

“Come on, just give me a chance. Let’s talk for a minute…”

The second they stepped outside, a blast of cold air hit them. Catherine was fine in her puffy coat, but Gavin, in nothing but his hospital gown, made it three seconds before he let out a dramatic yelp and bolted back inside.

“Catherine, you’re really just going to leave me out here? How could you?” he called after her.
