Catherine was taking a breather at her desk during lunch when Michelle, the lead secretary, wandered over for a chat.
She was almost three months pregnant now, but her limbs still looked slim. It was just that her curves had only gotten more pronounced, making her work clothes feel tighter these days. When Michelle commented, Catherine automatically straightened her jacket.
“I’ve put on a few pounds. Guess my metabolism isn’t what it used to be,” she said.
After the whole spy drama got cleared up, the office mostly trusted her again. Things felt almost normal. Michelle had been at the company two years longer than Catherine and had helped her a lot when she first joined. She’d always been friendly.
Michelle sat down across from her with a cup of warm water. “By the way, I have to ask about your personal life. What’s really going on with Gavin?”
Catherine gave a tired laugh. “Gavin’s just messing around. I’m just a secretary. He only uses me to get on Lance’s nerves.”
Michelle nodded like she’d expected that. “That’s what I thought. To people with money, we’re all just chess pieces. I just didn’t want you to take it seriously.”
Catherine smiled, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Of course not.”
But she remembered when she’d taken it seriously—back when Lance asked her to marry him. She’d believed it would make her life complete. Looking back, she knew how naive that was.
Now, she saw things clearly.
Michelle leaned in, lowering her voice a little. “I have a nephew, a couple years older than you. He just got back from studying overseas. Want me to introduce you?” She pulled up a photo on her phone and handed it over. “You’re not getting any younger, you know. Maybe it’s time to think about your future.”
“I’m really not looking to date right now.” Catherine didn’t even look. She just pushed Michelle’s phone back gently.
She was pregnant, after all. Going out on dates would just waste someone’s time, and it wouldn’t be fair.
Michelle wasn’t having it. “Even if you’re not interested, you need to at least try.”
She sent the photo to Catherine’s phone. “This is the only way Adelina will stop targeting you.”
The office gossips thought Catherine had come between Lance and Adelina. The smarter ones knew Adelina just didn’t want any women near Lance, especially not someone as pretty and single as Catherine.
Even if what Michelle said made sense, Catherine couldn’t go along with it.
