Lance’s amber eyes suddenly turned deep and unreadable.
He crossed the lobby with long, steady strides, coming to a gradual stop in the center. Catherine had been careful to keep a safe distance from Gavin, but the moment Lance appeared, Gavin shifted closer to her, almost like he was staking a claim.
“Lance, what are the odds? All the way out here and we still run into each other. Must be fate,” Gavin said, hands shoved into his pockets. There was a smirk on his face, something cocky and just a little bit challenging.
Lance met his gaze, calm and impossible to read. “I heard you’d be here, Gavin. Thought I’d drop by.”
Gavin’s eyes narrowed. He was already suspicious. “So you came here just to compete for my project?”
“It’s not competing if you’ve got the skills to back it up.”
Lance stood tall, his eyes flickering over to Catherine every so often. Gavin clenched his jaw, staring daggers at him.
Catherine felt trapped between them, the tension in the air so thick it made the whole lobby feel stiflingly hot.
The receptionist breezed over, oblivious to what was going on. “Good evening. Do you have a reservation with us?”
Gavin grinned, his expression turning almost obnoxious. “Babe, what do you say… Should we get a king bed tonight?”
Catherine’s anxiety flared at the misunderstanding. She shot Gavin a polite nod. “Thanks for bringing me here. It’s late, you should get some rest. I won’t keep you.”
She handed her ID to the receptionist. “I have a reservation.”
“Sorry for the confusion,” the receptionist said quickly, then led her to the front desk.
Gavin followed, raising his voice just enough to be heard, “Let me know your room number later. I’ll come by.”
He glanced over at Lance, not even trying to hide it. Catherine moved a step away from him, putting some space between them. She wasn’t worried that Lance would get the wrong idea, but it wouldn’t look good to be too close to Gavin, especially since he was Lance’s rival. The more Gavin talked, the more outrageous he became, so Catherine decided silence was the best way to handle him.
