“Is it Dad…” Jennifer’s voice was rough and quiet.
At least Pandora had gotten there in time to see her father one last time. He must have felt at peace, like he could finally let go without any regrets.
“Don’t say things like that!” Chrystal quickly stopped Jennifer, shaking her head. “That’s so unlucky.”
“It’s Lawler. He wants Claire’s contact info.”
Jennifer frowned. “Why would he want that? I thought he didn’t believe in traditional medicine.”
If Lawler wasn’t a student of her dad’s main doctor, Jennifer would have been way more annoyed.
“He doesn’t believe in it, but maybe Barry does,” Chrystal guessed.
Jennifer still looked suspicious. “You don’t think he’s just trying to find a reason to bother Claire, do you?”
Chrystal rolled her eyes. “Come on, he’s not that kind of person.”
“How about you just ask Claire what she wants? She’s young, and if Barry wants to talk with her about treatment plans, it could be good for her too.”
Since Chrystal put it that way, Jennifer had no choice but to ask. “Claire, Lawler wants your number. Should I give it to him?”
“It’s actually not for him, it’s for his mentor. He wants to talk to you,” Chrystal added.
Claire lifted an eyebrow. She had caught bits and pieces of Chrystal’s phone call earlier. She’d heard about Daniel’s main doctor before, and getting to talk with someone so experienced sounded like a great opportunity.
“Sure, give it to him. I don’t mind,” Claire said with a grin. “Maybe he’ll even apologize for being so stubborn.”
Claire was just joking, but Jennifer lit up right away.
“Yeah, he should apologize for saying traditional medicine is useless!”
Claire wasn’t bothered at all by the little detour of Lawler asking for her number.
After Jennifer dropped her and her grandma off at the Edison’s, they both washed up and got ready for bed.
Before sleeping, Claire checked her phone out of habit and noticed a message from an unknown number.
Hi, are you free to come to the hospital tomorrow? My mentor is flying back to Apex early in the morning and would like to meet you.
Maybe realizing he hadn’t said who he was, the sender quickly followed up.
This is Lawler, the doctor who saw Daniel today.
When Claire didn’t reply, Lawler ended up pacing back and forth in the on-call room.
Was she already asleep? Had she even seen his messages?
