Claire was just about to reply to the text when her phone started ringing. It was that same unfamiliar number from earlier.
She answered, her voice steady. “Hello?”
“Is this Claire? It’s Lawler.” His tone was softer than before, but still a little cold.
“Lawler.” That was all she said to greet him.
He didn’t seem bothered by how distant she sounded. “Did you see the message I sent you? If you’re free tomorrow, could you come to the hospital?”
He was just following through on what his mentor had asked him to do. Lawler was nothing if not persistent. Deep down, he knew his mentor wanted him to let go of his bias against traditional medicine, and sending him to invite Claire was part of that.
“I’ve got plans tomorrow,” Claire answered without even thinking about it.
She wasn’t the type to drop everything just because someone asked, even if she knew meeting Barry would be a great opportunity.
Lawler sounded doubtful. “Are you still upset about what I said earlier?”
Claire gave a small laugh. “You’re overthinking it, Lawler. I have class tomorrow. Honestly, I just don’t have time.”
“If I didn’t, I’d actually look forward to meeting Barry.”
Class? That caught Lawler off guard. He hadn’t realized Claire was still a student. She looked young, sure, but she had this calm, confident energy that made her seem older. As a doctor, he’d just figured she had a baby face. In medicine, looking too young usually meant patients wouldn’t trust you. Who would’ve guessed she was actually still in school?
The next morning, Claire got up early as usual. Edison drove her to the school entrance himself.
“Claire, is that boy—what was his name—going to give you trouble again?” Edison asked.
“If he does, make sure you call me.” To make his point, he pressed his hand to his ear in a “call me” gesture.
“Got it.” Claire smiled and waved goodbye.
