“What happened?”
Claire leaned forward so fast her forehead almost smacked into the seat in front of her.
Edison rolled down his window and stuck his head out. “Looks like there’s been an accident up ahead.”
A bus and a big truck had crashed, and now a whole line of cars was caught in a pile-up. If Edison hadn’t hit the brakes just in time, they probably would’ve been part of the mess too. Every car in front of them had gotten hit.
“I’m going to get out and check if anyone needs help. You stay here and work on your homework. Don’t go anywhere,” Edison said, glancing back at Claire as he got ready to step out.
Claire hesitated. “I’ll come with you.”
But Edison shook his head. He definitely didn’t want his niece to see something as gruesome as a big accident.
“Claire, just stay in the car. Accident scenes are pretty rough. You really don’t need to see that.”
“I’m fine, really. If someone needs help, I can do something.” Claire grabbed her backpack without thinking.
Edison saw and laughed. “Why are you bringing your bag? Be careful, or your homework’s going to get all messed up.”
“I keep first-aid stuff in here,” Claire said.
That caught Edison off guard. Most people felt prepared if they had a band-aid. Claire had actual first-aid supplies.
“Good thinking,” Edison said, giving her a thumbs-up.
He had totally forgotten that Pandora once mentioned her granddaughter knew a thing or two about medicine.
They got out and started walking forward. More cars had stopped behind them, and lots of people were getting out. Some were on their phones, maybe calling the police or an ambulance, maybe just letting their families know they were okay.
Claire and Edison checked each car as they went. Some people seemed fine, just shaken up. Others looked like they might have mild concussions. One guy had hit his head and was pressing his palm to his bloody forehead while talking on his phone.
