The crowd’s reaction was nothing like what the woman had expected. This trick had always worked for her in the past.
“They won’t give my daughter any medicine, and now they’re stopping me from finding a doctor,” she pleaded, her voice growing shrill.
Claire still had a firm grip on her arm, refusing to let her go. “You know your daughter needs a doctor. The ambulance is already here. Where are you trying to run off to?”
“So, you really don’t want your kid to get treated, do you?”
“You said yourself in the van that your husband only cares about sons. Aren’t you the same way?”
“You’re so tight with money, you won’t even take your daughter to the hospital. So, in the end, who’s going to get the settlement money?”
Claire kept pressing, not giving the woman a chance to explain herself.
Right then, a man jumped out of the van and tried to pull Claire aside. “What’s your problem?”
“She just wants to take her kid to a doctor. Are you going to take responsibility if something happens to the kid?”
“Move out of the way.”
He was loud and pushy, clearly trying to scare Claire off.
But Claire didn’t budge. “Don’t touch me. Or wait, are you in on this with her?”
“She said she came to the city looking for her husband. You’re not her husband, so what are you, her side guy?”
The man’s face went dark. He clearly hadn’t expected Claire to be this tough.
“No, that’s not it. I’m just, you know, standing up for someone in trouble.”
“We country folk aren’t like you city people with all your money.”
“She doesn’t want to go to the hospital because she’s broke. If you care so much, why don’t you give her the money?”
He was trying to provoke Claire, thinking she wouldn’t actually help. After all, she hadn’t wanted to give money or medicine earlier.
“Alright,” Claire said without hesitation.
The man stared at her, shocked.
