If he hadn’t been trying to bait them, he never would have let things get this far. The authorities would have stepped in ages ago.
Dane had already told the police everything, and they were handling things quietly behind the scenes. So far, no one had seen their people sneaking into Apex. If they had, there’s no way the police would have let Dane wander around on his own.
“We’ll split up here, then. I’ll head back—”
Claire didn’t get to finish. Dane pressed a finger gently to her lips.
“Don’t talk yet,” he whispered.
She nodded, understanding.
“You said we could get out through the back, right? Do we need to pass through this door first, or is there another way?” she asked, keeping her voice low.
Dane was listening hard, tuning in to every little sound outside. He was sure those people had arrived. Maybe they’d caught on about the scooter and tracked them down. Whether or not they’d actually seen Claire was anyone’s guess, but this kind of thorough search was meant to flush him out, to scare him into revealing himself.
A few moments ago, acting on instinct, Dane had pulled Claire down, shielding her with his body.
Claire poked him in the chest. “Could you… maybe get off me now?”
Dane blinked, looking a little sheepish. “Sorry.” He straightened up quickly.
Claire’s fingers started tapping on the keyboard, almost without thinking.
“Are they still out there?” she asked, glancing at Dane. She knew his hearing was sharper than most.
“I don’t think they’ve left,” Dane replied, but he wasn’t sure. Those people were stubborn. They wouldn’t give up easily.
Claire frowned, thinking. “Mind if I put on some music?”
He raised an eyebrow. Playing music seemed like a bad idea. If anything, the sound might just draw more attention.
But then the “music” started, and Dane’s brain just… paused.
The sound was unmistakable.
