"Honestly, if Claire sat out this winter camp, I think Cindy would feel a whole lot better," Molly said. "At least then, she’d feel like she and Claire were starting from the same place, both having to take the college entrance exams."
Octavia didn’t react. Molly, getting impatient, just blurted it out.
Valeria, sitting just on the other side of the wall, almost laughed out loud. If they hadn’t mentioned Claire and Cindy—the girl who’d been switched at birth with Claire—Valeria would have had no idea what these two were scheming.
Octavia was sly, and that so-called desk-mate of hers was downright nasty. Neither of them could be trusted.
Luckily, Valeria was sitting by the window, right where she could overhear everything while pretending to watch the scenery. If her seat had been anywhere else, she would have missed it all.
She quickly recorded the conversation and sent it to Claire, warning her not to come over just yet. She told Claire to kill some time somewhere else and wait until the two schemers left.
When Claire got the message, she wasn’t surprised at all. Octavia was always doing everything for her daughter. As for Molly... Claire honestly didn’t get why Molly hated her so much. Other than that one time Molly wanted to chase after Lance and Claire refused to play matchmaker, there wasn’t any real conflict between them.
Maybe Molly was jealous, but Claire always thought that was just normal teenage drama. It didn’t make sense for Molly to hate her this much. But now, it seemed like Molly really wanted to ruin her.
Claire couldn’t figure out when Molly’s resentment had run so deep. Still, she agreed with Valeria and decided not to show up just yet. She’d wait for the two of them to finish whatever plotting they were doing.
Meanwhile, Molly had no idea anyone was listening in, let alone recording them.
Octavia got the message loud and clear.
"Isn’t it a little ridiculous to try to talk Claire out of going?" Octavia replied. "She earned her spot fair and square. Why would she give it up? Unless, of course, the competition results don’t count anymore."
Something clicked for Molly. There was another way. If Claire’s competition results got questioned, she’d be out and the spot would go to the next person in line. Whoever replaced her would probably be thrilled.
Molly was suddenly excited. Octavia could see it and knew things were about to get messy. She definitely didn’t want to stick around Molly any longer.
