“She’s still so young, which means there’s really no limit to what she can achieve. Her future is wide open.” Walton couldn’t agree more about Claire. As for his wife’s idea of introducing her to their nephew, he didn’t bother to respond. There was just no way. Claire was a young girl—why would she be interested in Yates? Sure, Rowley was a great nephew in their eyes, but Claire was exceptional in her own right. And honestly, that guy who’d come to visit Van at the hospital? He looked even better than their nephew—taller, richer, and more charming. If Claire was going to pick between guys, of course she’d choose the one with more to offer.
“It’s such a shame. She’d be perfect for our family,” Helena muttered, wishing they could bring someone like Claire into their fold.
Walton hurried to change the subject. “Enough about her love life. Let’s worry about our nephew for a second.”
That did the trick. Helena’s focus immediately shifted. “How’s Yates’s leg? Is he going to be alright?”
“The surgery went really well, honestly. Big thanks to Claire—she totally saved the day when things looked rough. But we’ll still need to watch him closely for a while. Rehab’s going to be important when he starts recovering.”
Walton couldn’t shake off a bit of regret. If only Claire could become his protégé—the military could really use someone as capable as she was.
Meanwhile, Claire had no idea the older couple was busy singing her praises. After getting some much-needed sleep in her hotel room, she headed downstairs searching for something to eat. At the same time, her three friends returned from a long day out.
“We climbed a mountain today and even went to the temple on top to make a wish. Guess what I wished for, Claire,” Sophia teased as soon as she spotted Claire coming downstairs, immediately clinging to her arm.
Claire played along with a grin. “Let me guess… you wished for a crazy high score on your finals?”
Sophia burst out laughing. “I wish! You might be able to hit a perfect score, but I’ll never get that high, not in this lifetime. I just want to get into college in Cabinda. I’m hoping for Cabinda Normal University.”
With Sophia’s grades, getting accepted shouldn’t be a problem. Plus, it’d be nice to stay in the same city as Claire. Claire had already done the math and figured Sophia could definitely make it.
“You’ll get in, no problem,” Claire said, encouragement in her voice.
