“What are you doing? Your mother can still hear you, you know!” Bonnie shot her son a look of pure annoyance.
If he wasn’t her only child, she would’ve tossed him out without a second thought.
“Drop it, Mom. I’ll apologize. We don’t need any compensation.” Jasper finally grabbed his mom and pulled her off to the side, lowering his voice.
But Bonnie wasn’t having it. Her voice got even louder. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“Jasper, are you out of your mind, or did you actually fall for that girl?”
There was no way she’d let her son marry someone with no background. And Claire, with her fiery temper, was even less of an option. Bonnie couldn’t even trust her son to have a fling with a girl like that without worrying.
“Mom, please, just calm down. She knows…” Jasper leaned in and whispered in her ear.
Bonnie’s face changed instantly. “How could she possibly know?”
“I don’t know either.” Jasper looked just as confused.
For a second, Bonnie felt trapped. She knew she couldn’t just mess with Claire so easily anymore. If Claire really knew about that thing… not only did Bonnie have to back off, she’d probably have to treat her nicely, too.
So, just like that, Bonnie turned and put on the biggest smile anyone had ever seen.
She might be terrifying when she was angry, but when she smiled, she looked like the sweetest lady in the room. That was the thing about businesspeople. They could change their faces in the blink of an eye.
“About earlier—”
But before Bonnie could finish her sentence, Claire’s phone started ringing.
“Sorry, I need to take this.”
The number was unfamiliar, but Claire answered anyway.
“Claire, it’s Edison.”
“Edison? What’s going on?”
