The Day I Walked Away My Empire Began novel Chapter 302

Joanna was fuming, ready to snap back, but Mrs. Pitts shot her a look that shut her up on the spot. “That’s enough from you. Elio’s just come back from the brink—do you really have to get him all worked up right now?”

Joanna bit her lip and glared daggers at Lucie. She didn’t say another word, just turned away, still breathing hard.

The tension in the room finally eased a bit.

Elio took the chance to squeeze Lucie’s hand under the covers, like he was trying to give her a little courage.

Lucie’s fingers twitched. She tried to pull her hand away, but he just held on tighter.

“You heard them, right? Grandpa and Grandma are on our side.”

He leaned in, his voice barely more than a whisper against her ear. “Don’t even think about running. You’re stuck with me for life.”

His breath was warm against her skin.

Lucie’s ears burned bright red. She shot him a look. “Stop messing around. You need to focus on getting better.”

Elio grinned, looking like a kid who’d just scored his favorite treat. He couldn’t take his eyes off her.

Mrs. Pitts watched the two of them, her smile so wide her eyes nearly disappeared. “You see how perfect they are together? We should pick a wedding date soon, before I get too old to hold my great-grandchild.”

Mr. Pitts laughed. “What’s the rush? Let them get to know each other first.”

Lucie listened, her cheeks burning, her heart pounding and anxious.

She couldn’t possibly marry Elio.

But looking at him now, so weak and bandaged, she just didn’t have the heart to say no—not yet.

She told herself she’d explain everything once he was better.

“Um… The doctor said you need to rest. I’m just glad you’re awake. Take care, okay? I’ll come visit again soon.”

But Elio tightened his grip on her hand. “Lucie, don’t go. I’m like this, aren’t you going to stay with me?”
