The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 396

Gideon’s POV

The rain was coming down hard enough now that I could barely see ten feet ahead of me without the flashlight.

Sebastian was keeping pace just beside me without saying anything. We moved north, toward the creek bed I’d mentioned to Avery. I kept my flashlight low and my eyes on the ground.

There were no signs of Bjorn.

“How long have you known her?” I suddenly asked. I cringed a little the moment the words came out of my mouth, but I needed more information on their so-called “relationship”, and now was as good a time as any. It wasn’t often that I got to be alone with Sebastian, so I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.

Sebastian glanced at me. “What?”

“Avery,” I said. “How long have you known her?”

“Long enough.”

I waited to see if he would say more, but he didn’t.

“Where did you meet?”

Sebastian kept walking. “The human city. We ran into each other and the rest was history.”

“Surely you must have some kind of a cute story about how you met, or your first date.”

“Listen,” Sebastian said, “I appreciate the effort to make small talk, but I’m trying to find my son.”

My son, he had said.

I still didn’t think Bjorn was his, and that this whole thing was a shitty facade for the truth: that Bjorn was mine, and Avery was lying for some reason, and that she was being too stubborn to just hear me out.

But he was right; now wasn’t the time. Regardless of whose son Bjorn might be, he was in danger, and we needed to find him before this storm completely washed out all the trails.

We pushed further north without speaking. The creek bed came into view eventually, swollen from the rain and running fast and brown through the darkness. I checked both banks and found nothing. Sebastian scanned the area, then shined his flashlight up toward a ridge above us.

“He could have gone uphill,” Sebastian said. “Maybe to avoid the water.”
