The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 398

Avery’s POV

By the time we made it to Fiona’s car, my ankle was practically numb from the pain. That was good for my brain, because it gave me the strength to keep moving without having to lean on her, but it was definitely bad for my ankle.

“Here you go.” Fiona unlocked her car and opened the passenger side door for me, still smiling that plastic smile that never failed to look like a mask covering up something ugly underneath. “Do you need help getting in?”

“I’m good. Thanks.”

Maybe I was being stubborn. But I didn’t care. Fiona already made it very clear how she felt about me; she thought I was too old and not suited to being in this world. She thought she could replace me.

I wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of believing that any of those things might be true. Because they weren’t.

I climbed into the car, wincing with the movement. Fiona shut the door and rushed around to the driver’s side with her hood pulled up against the rain. The windshield was covered in little rivers that gushed down, and my breath was already fogging up the inside.

Fiona jumped into the driver’s side seat and rubbed her hands together while the car warmed up. A few moments later, she pulled away from the side of the road and began heading in the direction of Evergreen pack.

“So,” she said, glancing at me as she guided the car along the winding roads, “you seem confident that Bjorn knows his way around the wilderness.”

My jaw tightened. “He’s a smart boy. He’s run off before and been fine.”

Fiona lifted a brow, and I instantly regretted saying anything. “So this is a pattern for him?” she asked.

I looked out the window. “Just once or twice.”

“Interesting. But I suppose the pack lands are far different from the human city. It’s much easier to get home when you’re lost there than it is here.”

“He’ll manage,” I said, although we both knew that there was no certainty in that.

Fiona hummed as the familiar gates of Evergreen began to come into view in the distance. I could see the lights from here, and I was glad not to be stuck with her for long.
