Melissa didn’t look up as I approached. “Avery,” she said, pulling up a weed from the base of her summer squash plant. “Twice in one week. You must really like garlic.”

“Melissa,” I said, “I have a dilemma. I was hoping you might be able to help me.”

“Oh?”

I explained it as plainly as I could. I told her I needed something that could increase absorption, something that worked fast and was safe to combine with what I already had.

Melissa listened the entire time, nodding along, brow furrowed as she continued to pull up weeds. When I was finished, she was quiet for a few moments.

“There’s a plant,” she finally said. “Grows in the woods north of the garden, mostly near the creek. Dark leaves, waxy. Small thorns you don’t want to touch.” She glanced up at me, squinting against the sun. “On its own, it has aphrodisiac properties.”

My brows shot up. “An aphrodisiac.”

She nodded. “All aphrodisiacs really do is increase blood flow to the right areas. Maybe if you distill it with the right solutions, combine it with some other herbs, then it could work.”I scratched my head. It wasn’t a bad idea.

She stood, not bothering to wipe the dirt off her skirt. ” Just don’t touch the thorns. That’s where the poison comes from.” She smirked at me. “Unless you’re trying to get in the mood.”

I rolled my eyes. “Trust me. I’m not.” | turned. “Thank you, Melissa. I’m going to head out right now.”
