Chapter 435
“What, and you didn’t do the same with Sebastian?” Gideon grabbed my left hand and held it up, waving it in my face so the golden ring glinted in the sunlight.
I flushed and yanked my hand away. “That was different.”
He raised one brow. “Enlighten me.”
I opened my mouth, then closed it.
“Look,” he said. “Clearly, we’ve both been running our own little operations here, Avery. I’m not about to be the only one in this room feeling guilty about it.”
That was annoyingly fair, and I hated that it was.
“Fine,” I said. “We’re both liars. But your lie involved a teenage girl. Who just so happened to be desperate enough to drug you, and I still think she’s the one who led Bjorn out into the forest that day.”
Gideon went quiet at that. I could see his eyes darken with anger at the thought that Fiona had been the one to lure Bjorn away, nearly getting him killed. For a moment, I thought about Gideon holding Bjorn in the rain, and my heart cracked a little. He still didn’t know. The truth was, I wasn’t sure if I trusted him enough to tell him yet.
“Avery. Is Bjorn really-”
The door opened before Gideon could finish.
We both turned. Sebastian stepped into the doorway, no longer wearing his tuxedo but rather his usual casual attire. He looked at us, then around the room. When his eyes fell on me again, I could see them dart to my partially ruined dress, and I suddenly felt incredibly guilty for reasons I hadn’t thought about before.
“Morning,” he said.
“Morning,” Gideon and I said in unison.
His eyes moved from me to Gideon. He cleared his throat. “Gideon, I need you to come with me.”
Gideon straightened.
“What happened last night between us was consensual,” I said quickly. “Gideon and I-”
“Fiona was taken into custody last night,” Sebastian cut me off “Colt and Tegan handled it. She’s been in the holding cells since around midnight, and she’s refusing to answer any questions.” He looked at Gideon. “She said she’ll only talk to you, and that she has information you’ll want to hear.”
Gideon’s jaw set. “Of course she did.”
“I figured we could all go down there,” Sebastian added, shooting me another look. “Although, I’m assuming you might want to change…”
“Give me ten minutes,” I said.
Sebastian nodded and stepped out of the way. I hurried out of the room. It was only when I returned to mine and caught my face in the mirror that I realized how red I’d gotten after Sebastian had walked in.
Ten minutes later, after I had thrown on a pair of jeans and a sweater and actual shoes, I met back up with Gideon and Sebastian in the entrance hall. Sebastian led us outside, where the sun was high and golden and a little too warm for comfort this early in the morning.
The holding cells were in the village, beneath the warrior headquarters. We walked, since it wasn’t too far from the Alpha house. Gideon walked beside me, close enough that his shoulder touched mine on occasion.

I pretended not to notice it. I pretended a lot of things during that walk, actually; like being fine, and not embarrassed at all, and totally not a little curious to know if Gideon might take me up on my suggestion for our “compromise”.
Eventually, we reached the holding cells. Sebastian unlocked the outer door and pushed it open, and I followed him through,
with Gideon behind me.
The cell at the end had its door standing open. Colt was leaning against the wall outside it, arms crossed, and he straightened
when he saw us coming.
