The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 450

Chapter 450

She was right. I sat. She handed me a small basket of green beans and I got to work snapping the stems off, perhaps a little more violently than I should have. To her credit, she didn’t ask anything, and didn’t seem to mind when I shoved a couple of the beans into my mouth as I worked.

Finally, about halfway through the basket, I couldn’t take it anymore.

“Sebastian proposed.”

Melissa didn’t look up from what she was doing. “And? Did you accept?”

“I walked out.” I sighed. “He said he loved me. That he would mark me and claim Bjorn as his heir.”

Melissa was quiet for a moment, moving down the row. “He’s been in love with you since about three weeks after you arrived,” she said.

I looked at her. “Did he tell you that?”

She smiled faintly. “He didn’t have to.”

I shook my head and went back to my work. “I feel a little bad. Sebastian is a good man. Ten years ago, I might have jumped at the opportunity to be with someone like him. And Bjorn is sick, and this could fix everything, but…”

“But you don’t love him,” she said. I shook my head, and she went on, “Sebastian is someone who loves very deeply. Very. Deeply.” Her smile turned a little bitter. “That’s the problem. He needs the same in return. He’ll care for you and Bjorn deeply, and you’ll never want for anything. But if the amount of love you give him doesn’t match up to what he wants, it’ll eat away at him.”

Melissa stood and brushed the dirt off her hands. “Trust me. I know from experience.”

“Right.” I set aside the green beans. “I’m sorry for bringing this up. I know you two were fated-”

She waved her hand. “Don’t be sorry. I’m glad you came to me.”

I tilted my head. “What happened between you two, if you don’t mind me asking? I mean, Sebastian

mentioned it, but…”

She shrugged. “I loved him, but not the way he wanted. Not the way he needed. And we were both miserable for a long time before we finally let each other go.” She knelt and began tugging at some weeds around a tomato plant. “You’re right: he is a good man. One of the best. But that is exactly why you shouldn’t marry him unless you’re certain.”

I bit my lip, considering her words.

“I’m not certain,” I muttered.

Melissa glanced up at me. “Because your heart wants someone else.”

My lips parted, but Melissa just smiled and went back to her work.

She was right, and that was the problem. I knew exactly what my heart wanted. Despite everything that had happened, there was no doubting the truth.

Everything in me wanted Gideon, at the end of the day. Even if it was dangerous.

That was why no other man had ever formed a connection with me. Not because of differences in biology, but because no one was him. Not any human man. Not Sebastian.

But running back to Gideon right now was dangerous for so many reasons. I was already pushing the limit by giving in to my wolf’s urges during the full moon.
