Chapter 438
Avery’s POV
Bjorn was on his stomach on the floor of his room with his legs kicked up behind him, tongue stuck out in concentration as he glued a piece onto his model airplane. He looked up when I pushed his door open, and hardly had enough time to push himself to his knees before I crossed the room and dropped down, pulling him into a hug.
“Mom.” His voice was muffled against my shoulder. “What are you doing?”
“Just humor me,” I said.
He went still for a moment, clearly confused, before his arms came up and he hugged me back. We stayed like that for a bit, me on my knees on his bedroom floor with my arms around my son, his chin hooked over my shoulder. I shut my eyes and breathed in his familiar scent, and for a little while, I felt all of my worries wash away.
“Are you okay?” he asked after a bit.
“Yeah,” I said. “I’m fine.”
“Did something bad happen?”
“No,” I said.
“Um… Okay.” He patted my back a couple of times, and I snorted, pulling back enough to look at him. I brushed some hair out of his face, then looked at his airplane. “This is coming along,” I said, nodding my
chin at it.
Bjorn grinned and carefully picked up the airplane, holding it so I could see. “I just finished gluing on the rudders. Watch this.” He reached into the tiny cockpit and wiggled something that made the rudder flaps
move back and forth.
“That’s so cool,” I said, sitting back on my heels. “You’re good at this, Bjorn.”
“Thanks.” He set the airplane back down. “I really like working on it. It makes me feel calm and like I can focus.”
I stood, ruffling his hair. “Maybe we can go out today or tomorrow and get you another kit.”
Bjorn looked up at me. “Really?”
“Yes,” I laughed. “Really. But you have to finish this one first. And don’t rush that one just because you want another!”
“Okay, okay.” He sat down and went back to his building project, carefully gluing on some more pieces with a precision I had never seen him use before. I watched him for a while. I had to give Gideon credit; he’d picked a good gift.

Sebastian appeared in the doorway a few minutes later. He looked at me on the floor, looked at Bjorn absorbed in his airplane, and leaned against the doorframe.
“Hey, champ,” he said. “You hungry? I think I heard the cook saying something about making cinnamon
rolls downstairs.”
Bjorn’s head snapped up at that. He looked at me for permission.
“Go,” I said, smiling.
He was up and out the door like a whirlwind, nearly barreling into Sebastian on his way out. Sebastian stepped out of the way just in time, then turned to me once he was gone.
“You took off suddenly,” he said. “After last night, I have to admit that I’m a little worried about you.”
I sighed and sat on the edge of Bjorn’s bed.
