Chapter 445
Avery’s POV
Afterwards, I laid on my back, staring at the ceiling while my pulse slowly came back down to something somewhat close to normal. The fire had burned low again. The room was warm and dim and smelled like sex and wine, and my muscles were loose and my wolf was content for the time being.
Gideon was sitting on the edge of the bed with his back to me. He had pulled his pants on and had his shirt in his hands, but he didn’t put it on right away.
I cleared my throat and propped myself up on my elbow. “You were-”
“Avery-”
I stopped talking. So didGideon. Silence fell for a moment, then we both said at the same time, “Go ahead.”
My cheeks flushed a little. “You first.”
Gideon hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath and looked at me. “Did you see anyone else?” he asked. “While you were gone?”
I shut my eyes and exhaled slowly.
“Gideon… We literally just talked about this.”
“I know what we talked about,” he muttered. “But I’m asking anyway. I don’t think it’s too personal of a question, and I have a right to know.”
I stared at him.
“I didn’t sleep with anyone,” he said. “Ten years. Not once.” He turned back to face away from me. “So there. You know something about me. Let me know something about you.”
I looked at the back of his head for a moment and sighed. Frustrating as it was, I couldn’t blame him. He was a male Alpha wolf whose mate had spent a decade in another world. It was only natural for him to want to know if I had taken another lover.
“No one,” I said.
Gideon whipped his head around. His eyes darted to my belly, on full display beneath my bare breast as the blanket had pooled around my hips. “Not once? But I thought-”
“There was one person,” I said quickly, pulse spiking a little. “In the very beginning. It was how Bjorn was
conceived.”
Gideon’s eyes darkened a little. “You moved on fast,” he said.
I swallowed. “I was lonely and afraid, and I needed a place to stay.”

“So you slept with a man for that purpose?” he asked.
I didn’t answer that. I hated that I had to lie about this at all, and deep down, my wolf whinged at the bluff. “We should be honest with him,” she was saying. I tried my best to ignore her.
“There hasn’t been anyone since,” I said.
He was quiet for a moment, looking down at the shirt in his hand. When he turned to look at me this time, something had shifted in his gaze. It softened a little, but there was a thread of surprise there, too.
“Only one person? In ten years?” he asked.
I shrugged and stood, walking across the mattress before hopping down off the foot of the bed, where my pajamas had been discarded. I picked up my underwear and pulled them on. “You just said you didn’t see anyone at all.”
“Yeah, but…” He chuckled wryly. “I mean… look at me.” He gestured vaguely to his face. “You’re so fucking gorgeous, Avery.”
I flushed a little, covering it by pulling my shirt over my head. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“You probably outshine the majority of human women.”
“There are plenty of beautiful human women.”
“You’re successful, too,” he added.
