Avery’s POV
I returned to Evergreen a little before sunset, after meeting briefly with Aldric and the pack healers to discuss the next moves now that the trial period was over. The medicine was set to be rolled out to the other sick children within the fortnight, the news of which made up for the rapidly worsening migraine that was making spots dance across my vision.
I had Aldric’s Beta take me home. Sebastian was still… wherever he was, likely arguing with Gideon, and I didn’t feel like facing him.
The house was calm and quiet when I arrived. I checked on Bjorn, who was resting in bed, then took some migraine medication and headed down to the library on the first floor.
I probably should have rested myself, but I couldn’t. My head was too full of noise and pain, and I wanted something to distract it.
There had to be something I could do to eliminate Bjorn’s illness without having to lean on Gideon or Sebastian, or any man for that matter. I was sure of it; I had spent enough years working in holistic medicine to think, for even a moment, that the solution the healer had laid out for me was the only solution.
And I wouldn’t rest until I found something.
The library was vast and devoid of sentient life. Exactly what I needed. I kept the overhead lights off, not wanting to make my head hurt worse than it already did, and relied on the small table lamps to illuminate the titles as I began making my way down the rows of shelves.
I started in the science section, where I pulled out a couple of books on native werewolf plants and herbs. There was a good chance that I already knew most of the content in those books, but I figured it was as good a start as any.
Then, I made my way over to the healthcare and medicine section. I pulled out anything and everything that seemed relevant to my cause, adding them all to a cart I’d found at the end of one of the rows.
I was just about to settle down at a desk to get to work when I heard the library door open and shut, echoing in the quiet space.
