The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 479

Avery’s POV

Sebastian walked over to my worktable and pulled out my chair. “Sit,” he repeated. “Please.”

I arched a brow. “Is everything alright?”

“Yes. Just… sit down.”

I sat, but laughed a little as I did. “You’re kind of freaking me out, you know,” I said.

“I’m sorry,” he said, running a hand through his hair. “It’s just…” He cleared his throat, lowered his hand, and leveled me with a steady look I knew all too well. “Listen, Avery, I think you should know that—”

My phone rang before he could get the rest of the sentence out. I glanced at it sitting on the edge of the table. Claire’s name was lighting up the screen, which meant that it was business-related. She didn’t call me like this unless it was important.

“Sorry,” I said, reaching for the phone. “Would you mind giving me one second? It’s my assistant. This might be important.”

Sebastian’s jaw ticked, but he nodded and leaned against the wall with his arms folded, waiting patiently.

I grabbed the phone and answered. “Claire? What’s up?”

“Avery.” Her voice sounded urgent. “We have a problem.”

“What happened?”

“Several of your shareholders just showed up at headquarters. They’re demanding to speak with you in person.”

I blinked. “What? Why?”

“They got wind of the fact that you haven’t been back to the human lands in over two months. Word is spreading that you’ve been spending all your time in the werewolf packs, and they’re concerned about where your loyalties lie.”

My chest constricted, and I sat up a little straighter, glancing at Sebastian. “That’s ridiculous. I’ve been working remotely. I haven’t missed a thing.”

“I tried telling them that, but they don’t seem to care. They want to see you face-to-face, and they’re threatening to pull their investments if you don’t show up.” Claire paused. “Avery, this is serious. If they pull out, we could lose a significant portion of our funding. The whole operation could collapse.”

I shut my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose. With the sick children still needing medicine, medicine which our scientists were currently producing in bulk for that exact purpose, we couldn’t risk the loss of funds right now. “How many shareholders are we talking about?” I asked.

“Three. But they represent about forty percent of our capital,” she replied.

I cursed under my breath. Forty percent. That was enough to tank the entire company if they decided to walk away. Lycan Root would go belly up overnight and the sick kids would never get their medicine.

“Okay. I’ll be there tonight,” I said. “Treat them to the nicest dinner and lodgings we can afford and tell them I’m on my way.”

“Thank you.” Claire’s exhale was audible even through the phone. “I’ll hold them off as long as I can, but you need to get here soon. They’re already pissed.”

“I know. I’ll leave right now.”

I hung up and looked at Sebastian. He was still standing there with his arms folded, watching me.

“What happened?” he asked.
