“How’s your work going? When are you coming back?”
“Miss me?”
Vivica didn’t answer directly, retorting playfully instead, “Aren’t you the one who misses me and Chaim?”
A deep, rich laugh came from the other end of the line. “I do,” Joseph admitted with a sigh, then his tone brightened. “I’ve been working around the clock these past few days just to get back sooner. If all goes well, I should be able to fly back tomorrow night.”
Tomorrow night… Vivica’s heart leaped with anticipation.
“In that case…” She was about to say, *Let me know once your flight is confirmed, and I’ll come pick you up*—
But before she could finish, a black car shot through the intersection from her right, blatantly running a red light.
In that split second, Vivica’s mind went blank. She acted on pure instinct, wrenching the steering wheel to swerve away from the oncoming vehicle. But it was too late.
With a deafening crash, the other car slammed into the rear of her vehicle. The impact was so violent that her trunk was instantly crushed. The force sent her car into a frantic spin in the middle of the road. It spun twice before finally crashing into the median strip and screeching to a halt.
It all happened so fast. When the spinning stopped, the intersection was littered with car parts, a scene of absolute carnage. Inside the car, the airbag had deployed. Vivica had slumped over, unconscious, with blood trickling from a wound on her head, its severity unclear. Her phone had been thrown from her hand, but the call hadn't disconnected. Joseph’s voice, raw with panic, could be heard screaming from the small speaker.
“Vivica! What happened?”
“Vivica! Vivica, answer me!”
“Vivica!”
Far away on his business trip, Joseph shot to his feet, phone clutched in his hand, shouting in terror. Roderic, who had just brought in his meal, jumped in alarm.
“Boss, what’s wrong?” Roderic asked immediately.
Joseph’s face was pale, his eyes wide with panic. He strode quickly out of the room, his voice tight and trembling. “Something’s happened to Vivica! We have to go back now!”
Before Roderic could ask any more questions, Joseph barked out his orders. “Book the soonest flight. If there isn’t one, charter a plane. As fast as you can! Now!”
“Yes, boss. I’m on it,” Roderic said, dropping the lunch and rushing to do as he was told.
Back on the main street in Riverdale, Vivica was still unconscious in her wrecked car. Seeing smoke billowing from the vehicle, concerned bystanders worried it might explode and rushed over, banging on the window and calling out to her.
“Your phone? We didn’t see it when we pulled you out.”
“It must still be in the car.”
Vivica’s car hadn't exploded. It had just spun around and was now pressed flush against the median. Someone went to search the car and quickly returned with her phone.
“Found it. It was under the gas pedal.”
Vivica took the phone, her voice still trembling as she said, “Thank you.” She had just unlocked the screen, not even having time to find Joseph in her call history, when the screen lit up with his incoming call.
She answered instantly.
“Hello, Joseph…”
“Vivica, are you okay? What happened? Was it a car accident?” Joseph, already in a car racing to the airport, felt his heart leap into his throat when the call connected. Hearing her voice, however weak, was a small relief. At least she was alive.
Vivica’s heart was still pounding. “Yes,” she said faintly. “I was driving normally… a car ran a red light, and I couldn’t avoid it in time. It hit me.”
