Raymond was just as startled by the loud shutter sound. Seeing Joseph's dark, questioning glare, he nearly dropped his phone.
"N-nothing. I'll explain later. You guys keep going with the meeting."
Raymond offered a sheepish smile, quickly putting his phone away and sitting up straight like a well-behaved student.
Joseph gave him a warning glance before returning to the discussion about the case.
Raymond looked down at the stealthy photo he had managed to take, smiled to himself, and hit send to Vivica.
[See for yourself. He's perfectly fine, still stuck in a meeting.]
When her phone buzzed, Vivica jumped slightly and immediately sat up straight.
Seeing the photo from Raymond, she quickly tapped to open it.
Then, she found herself staring at the screen, completely captivated.
It was a profile shot.
Joseph's features were striking and deeply defined. From the side, the high bridge of his nose and his sharp, handsome jawline were fully on display. He looked so incredibly attractive that it made her heart flutter like a startled deer.
She stared at the image in a daze for a long moment, an unconscious smile pulling at the corners of her lips.
Now that she thought about it, even though they were married, she didn't actually have any photos of Joseph on her phone.
This candid shot was perfect. She had to save it.
Vivica tapped the screen and saved the image to her camera roll.
Raymond sent a few more messages.
[Don't worry, while he's on my watch, I'll be putting in 120% effort to guarantee his safety.]
[Stop stressing. Just focus on taking care of yourself and Chaim. If anything comes up, even if Mr. Baird tries to hide it from you, I'll make sure you know.]
Raymond knew that offering this kind of guarantee was the only way Vivica would get any sleep tonight.
And he was right.
Reading those two messages finally set Vivica's mind at ease.
"Alright, let's call it a night. You should head home, and I'm heading back to the hotel," Joseph said, signaling it was time for Raymond to leave.
"Let's go together, I'll drop you off at your hotel," Raymond offered.
Joseph nodded, not turning down the offer.
On the way, the conversation naturally drifted back to the Chase brothers.
It was truly a case of 'the deeper you dig, the darker it gets.'
The crimes the Chase brothers had committed over the years went far beyond the ruthless tactics they used against their own family.
They didn't understand the actual mechanics of running a business. Instead, they relied heavily on self-proclaimed 'masters' for guidance, deeply entrenched in superstition, while constantly resorting to shady, underhanded tactics behind the scenes.
If this case was blown wide open, it wouldn't just be the two brothers rotting in prison; it would likely destroy the political careers of quite a few officials who were tangled in their web.
But for Joseph, this was perfect.
Them dying of old age in a prison cell was the absolute safest outcome for Vivica.
