The rain was blinding. The flooded streets were a churning river of leaves, debris, and garbage sweeping past his ankles.

He kept a hyper-vigilant eye on his surroundings, trudging forward through the muck, step by treacherous step. It looked less like a walk and more like a grueling wilderness expedition.

Back in the car, Vivica had been stuck for over an hour.

Her bodyguards noted that some drivers had grown too panicked to wait and abandoned their vehicles to escape on foot.

Those empty cars just made the gridlock worse. Some had flooded and stalled out entirely, forcing people to literally push them out of the way to clear a narrow path.

Moving forward was impossible. They could only wait until the mess behind them was cleared so rescue teams could direct traffic to reverse out.

Vivica thought about calling Joseph to check his progress, but stopped herself. She didn't want to distract him or make him anxious. In these conditions, if he rushed and got into an accident, it would be a disaster.

So, she held off.

Seeing her tense up, one of the bodyguards turned around to reassure her. "Don't worry, Mrs. Baird. If Mr. Baird can't make it, we'll escort you on foot to the shopping mall over there to take shelter."

Vivica offered a faint smile. "It's fine, I'm not in a hurry."

Just as the words left her mouth, the bodyguard in the passenger seat let out a gasp. "Isn't that Mr. Baird? Up ahead, hopping the guardrail!"

Vivica jolted, whipping her head toward the window.

The glass was blurred by the torrential rain, and the sky had gone pitch black. Even with the streetlights, visibility was down to maybe fifteen feet.

But those fifteen feet were enough for her to clearly make out the man vaulting over the metal barrier.

She had no idea where he had walked from. Even wearing a raincoat, he was completely drenched, clearly having battled the storm for quite some time.
