Vivica knew he was right. This wasn't the time to play hero. Even if she didn't care about herself, she had to think about the baby.
While they waited, she scrolled through WhatsApp.
Her work group chat was chaotic. Coworkers were posting about wading home barefoot and getting completely drenched. Others posted pictures of their cars stalled out in flooded streets, waiting for tow trucks. A few had made it home only to find the power was out, with no way to cook dinner.
Then Quintina called.
"Vivica, did you make it home? This storm is completely insane, it's like a fifty-year record! An umbrella is completely useless!"
Quintina was on shift at the hospital. Seeing the apocalyptic news footage, she immediately thought of her best friend's commute and called to check in.
Leaning back against the leather seat, listening to the heavy thudding of rain on the roof, Vivica kept her voice calm. "We're stuck in traffic. The roads are a mess, so we just have to wait for the police to clear it."
"You didn't go into the tunnel, did you? I saw online that it's totally flooded. There are pictures of drivers sitting on top of their cars waiting to be rescued!"
"No, we're stuck outside of it. But the water is starting to pool around us here, too."
"What are you going to do? It's pouring, you're pregnant, you can't exactly just get out and walk."
"It's fine. Joseph said he's figuring out a way to come get me, and he told me to just wait in the car. Don't worry, I have two bodyguards with me. I'm not alone."
Knowing she had protection and that Joseph was on his way made her feel a lot better.
Before she even finished the call with Quintina, another call came through.
It was Raymond, calling all the way from Sydville City.
"Quintina, I've got another call, I have to go. Don't worry about me, I'll text you when I get home."
