Now that she was finally safe and relaxed, Vivica had the bandwidth to really look at the chaos outside.
The torrential rain was relentless. Police cruisers tore past them with sirens wailing, followed closely by heavy rescue vehicles rushing through the storm.
It felt like they were driving through the middle of a disaster movie.
Pregnancy hormones made her emotions swing wildly. Staring at the devastation, she murmured sadly, "I can't even imagine the damage this storm is going to cause. Some people are going to lose absolutely everything."
"Yeah," Joseph replied, his tone heavy. "The economic toll is going to be astronomical. And the forecast says this weather is going to hold for a few more days. You should probably request time off and stay home from work."
She didn't answer right away. Her eyes had locked onto a dip in the road ahead, where an elderly man pushing a cargo tricycle had just collapsed into the rushing water.
"Honey, that old man fell!"
Joseph shifted his gaze and immediately spotted the man struggling in the floodwaters.
"Got it. I'm pulling over. Stay in the car, I'm going out to help."
He checked the mirrors, navigated the G-Wagon to the shoulder, and hit the hazards.
The water on the street was already over ankle-deep. Without bothering to wrangle himself back into the raincoat, Joseph simply grabbed the umbrella and sprinted out toward the fallen man.
From the passenger seat, Vivica couldn't hear what Joseph was saying to the man.
She just watched as he hauled the elderly man to his feet, muscled the heavy tricycle upright, and helped push the rig up onto the safety of the sidewalk.
From the way the man was bowing and gesturing, he was clearly thanking him profusely.
Joseph nodded, adjusted his umbrella, and jogged back to the car.
By the time he slid back into the driver's seat, whatever parts of him had been drying were soaked through all over again.
"Wipe off, quickly! You're freezing!" She handed him the pile of damp towels, looking back out the window with a worried frown. "Why is he still trying to ride in this? It's suicidal."
