The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 148

After Petty finished speaking, the locker room turned so quiet she could hear nothing but her own breath. The hallway outside, usually filled with voices, suddenly felt empty. Not a sound drifted in. Seconds ticked by, or maybe minutes. Time seemed to stretch forever.

“Move. I’m going home.”

She reached for the door, but Franco’s hand caught hers. He pressed her palm against the door, his calloused fingers rough against her skin. His broad shoulders closed in, filling the space between them. She tried to push him away, but he turned her, pinning her back against the door. In the dim light, his eyes looked impossibly dark.

“This ends here. You’re not getting involved in this.”

Her eyes were clear and steady, shining with stubborn determination. That fire flickered in Franco’s gaze too, catching him off guard.

“Every day, people risk everything for stability. Some even give their lives. If breaking this web means someone like me has to—”

Before she could finish, Franco’s grip on her wrist tightened, his fingers digging in, almost hurting her. He searched her face, his voice dropping so low it sent a chill through her.

“If you’re so eager to die, you wouldn’t have made it this far. Then what? If you died tonight, what would actually change?”

For the first time, Petty had to admit she was in over her head. Franco was far more ruthless and unpredictable than she’d thought.

“My death might not change anything right now, but I still believe in justice. Sooner or later, they’ll get what they deserve.”

Franco let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Justice.” The word sounded almost like a joke coming from Gavin’s daughter.

Did Gavin ever think, back when he sabotaged the plane and killed Franco’s parents, that twenty years later his own daughter would be here, talking about justice with that same unshakeable belief?

Suddenly, Franco let go of her wrist.
