Everyone seemed to finally unwind.
“These facilities… seriously, the White family’s hospital doesn’t miss,” someone said with a sigh of appreciation. “I still can’t believe they put us up here. It feels a little unreal.”
One of her coworkers munched on the breakfast Petty had brought. “The White family has always been generous. Remember when we went with Petty to that Eminence charity auction and ran smack into Franco? That was wild.”
“Oh! Speaking of that—” The other coworker clapped his hands, suddenly remembering. “I almost forgot to tell you, Petty!”
He turned towards her, excited. “You know how much Jay gave us as a red envelope that night? It was basically my year-end bonus. Wait, didn’t you get one too?”
Petty was pouring water for everyone, her voice flat. “Oh.” She hadn’t exactly gotten cash—what she received was a sapphire brooch worth millions at auction. She turned it down, though. She didn’t admit to anything, so everyone just assumed she got paid like they did.
“Franco might look standoffish, but he’s always treated us regular folks pretty well. Just getting us rooms this nice… honestly, I’m about to be a Franco fan for life.”
Petty set the glasses down on the nightstand. She could admit, rules at the White Group were strict—back when Owen first joined, he was impossible to manage, but even he mellowed out after joining up. Still, she’d never heard a single bad word about Franco mistreating his employees. As a boss, he knew what he was doing.
She needed to swing by the White estate later to see her grandma. She’d already told Malcom her plans, and they were set to practice shooting that afternoon. Once her coworkers finished eating, she got ready to head out.
“Has anyone seen my press pass?” she asked.
“Didn’t Jay give it back to you?” one coworker replied.
Petty glanced at him, puzzled.
He explained, “After you left the other day, Jay swung by, found your pass, and said he’d return it for you. He left right after, so I figured you already had it.”
