“Sit up straight.” His tone was soft, almost casual.
Petty leaned her head against the seat, shut her eyes and tried to block out the man’s presence. His energy was intense and it left her nerves all jumbled. After a while, her mind wandered to other things. The application for the foreign correspondent post was probably getting reviewed right now. Hopefully, she’d get an answer in a day or two. If everything went as planned, she’d be on her way to Everell after the holidays. But first, she’d need to spend the break at The White Estate with her grandmother…
Franco leaned back with his eyes closed, catching a quick rest. Soon, he heard someone’s gentle breathing beside him. He opened his eyes and glanced over at Petty, who was already fast asleep.
…
The helicopter touched down on the roof of The White Hospital.
Franco felt Petty shift in his arms. He opened his eyes, noticing her eyelashes trembling as she slowly woke up. He quietly helped her sit upright in her own seat.
Petty blinked hard, taking a second to realize they’d landed. She stifled a yawn, sneaking a peek at Franco to see if he was awake, but his eyes were still closed. Then she got up and shook Hans.
“We’re back in Cabinda, you heavy sleeper!”
Hans woke up with a start.
The medical team was already in position, waiting for them to land. As soon as the helicopter doors opened, they hurried Harris away for treatment.
Just as Franco stepped out, Jay hurried over looking worried.
“Franco, I couldn’t reach you. Jackson called. It’s Adelaide… she’s been coughing up blood.”
Petty stepped off the helicopter and caught the end of Jay’s sentence.
The car ride back to The White Estate was a blur, speeding down the roads in tense silence.
As soon as they arrived, Petty rushed toward the house but Jackson blocked her way.
“Jackson, what happened? Why was she coughing up blood? Why is she still here and not at the hospital?”
Jackson’s face was dark with worry. “Mrs. White, Adelaide asked to see Mr. White alone,” he said gently.
Petty froze in place.
