The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 244

Her mouth had been battered beyond recognition.

Franco’s eyes darkened.

Petty went absolutely pale. Who could do something so cruel to Susan?

She squeezed her trembling hands together, her voice almost shaking with anger. “Did you catch who did it?”

A female officer nodded. “We did. It was a drunk. He’s being questioned right now.”

Inside the interrogation room, the lights were harsh and glaring. The man sitting in the metal chair stank of alcohol, his hands cuffed tightly in front of him.

“Did you know the victim?” the officer asked.

He’d sobered up a little since the police picked him up, but the bright light made him squint, and he looked just about ready to fall apart. When the officer barked her question, he startled, and a nervous, sour hiccup escaped him.

“I don’t know her,” he mumbled.

The officer’s tone grew colder. “If you don’t know her, then why did you kill her?”

“I swear, I didn’t!” Panic bleached all the color from his face.

“I…” He rubbed frantically at his head with his cuffed hands, bloodshot eyes darting everywhere. “Honestly, I can’t remember much… I was coming down the stairs and accidentally bumped into her. She fell and then cussed me out, called me a drunk. I’d already lost money gambling and I went out drinking because I was pissed. She’s the one who crashed into me first… I just lost it… I grabbed a stone… I just…”

“So you killed her?” asked the officer, her gaze sharp and steady.

“No!” the drunk shouted in desperation. “I didn’t mean to kill her. I just wanted her to shut her mouth. How could I know she was so weak? I never meant for things to go that far, officer, please, you’ve got to believe me. I was drunk, I barely remember anything.”

Listening to his confession, Petty felt her anger boiling over, but she managed to keep her voice even.

“That’s not possible. Susan has always been gentle. Even if you really knocked her over, she’d just tell you to watch your step, not hurl insults. Now Susan’s gone and she can’t defend herself. You’re just telling your version of the story.”
